15 Effective Relaxation Ideas

1. Have a Cup of Tea, Coffee, or Hot Chocolate

Think back to the last warm beverage you had. How did that drink make you feel? Most people enjoy warm drinks like coffee and tea, but most aren’t aware that warm beverages also have some amazing relaxation benefits.

For example, the temperature of the drink forces you to slow down, which allows your mind to take a break. In addition, drinking warm beverages expands your blood vessels, which allows your muscles to relax. So, grab a cup of your favorite hot drink and get to sipping.

2. Do Something Active

I know you’ve heard this over and over again, but doing some form of physical activity every day is good for your physical health as well as your mental wellbeing. Being active and increasing your heart rate reduces stress hormones and increases the release of endorphins, which naturally elevate your mood.

If you need some ideas for getting active, try running, playing a sport, following a workout on YouTube, or trying Yoga.

3. Drink Water

If we’re all being honest, we don’t drink nearly enough water, and water is crucial to the body’s ability to function. Being dehydrated inhibits our ability to relax because it increases stress in the body and decreases the amount of serotonin that gets produced. Taking a break to grab a glass of water can quickly help you feel better and more relaxed.

4. Start a Gratitude Journal

Practicing gratitude is a proven method for increasing relaxation and overall happiness. A great way to practice gratitude is by starting a gratitude journal in which you write 3-5 things you are grateful for every day. You’d be surprised how much better you’ll feel when you look for the good in each day rather than focusing on the negatives. If you’re just getting started, try this guided gratitude journal.

5. Listen to Songs You Love

Music is powerful.  Researchers have said that music functions at the same level as medication for stress reduction. When you need a moment to relax, try simply putting on songs that make you happy or songs that are relaxing.

6. Take a Hot Shower or Bath

Like hot beverages, taking a hot bath or shower allows your muscles to relax and gives you time to slow your mind. In addition, taking a shower or bath gives you time completely to yourself, which allows you to focus on yourself rather than your obligations.

7. Practice Meditation

Meditation has many benefits for your mental well-being including reducing negative emotions, managing stress, and increasing your ability to focus on the present. Try following a guided 5 or 10-minute meditation to get started.

Lastly, walking encourages mindfulness, which gives you the added benefits of meditation.
